Preparing Yourself for Unforeseen Events
President Hinckley said, "We are carrying a message of self reliance throughout the Church. Self-Reliance cannot be obtained when there is serious debt hanging over a household. One has neither independence not freedom from bondage when it is obligated to others. Being debt free is preparing ourselves from unforeseen events in our lives." Being Prepared Is Provident Living. The Best Welfare Program Is Our Own Welfare Program(Saving Food In Our Homes)
President Hinckley said, "Brethren and sisters too, I wish to urge you again the importance of self-reliance on the part of every individual Church member and family. We have a great welfare program with facilities for such things as grain storage in various areas. It is important that we do this. But the best place to have some food set aside is within our homes, together with a little money in savings. The best welfare program is our own welfare program. Five or six cans of wheat in the home are better than a bushel in the welfare granary.

Becoming Debt Free
"Many more people could ride out the storm-tossed waves of their economic lives if they had their supply of food and were debt free. Today we find that many people have followed this counsel in reverse: they have at least a year's supply of debt and are food-free." President Thomas S. Monson

Release thyself from bondage
Provident Living message from 03/03/2013
Today's message is a quote from a talk by President Hinckley at the Priesthood session of General Conference in 1998. It has now been 15 years since he gave this talk and it is still important and great advise. "Since the beginning of the church, the Lord has spoken on this matter of debt. To Martin Harris through revelation he said: "Pay the debt thou hast contracted with the printer. Release thyself from bondage." (D:&C 19:35) "Come listen to a prophet's voice and hear the word of God"." Being prepared is Provident Living! -Sister Janet McManus

The Password to Success
Ensign (March 2009, p52) President Ezra Taft Benson (1899-1994) said: "The world would take people out of the slumps. Christ takes the slums out of people, and then they take themselves out of the slums. The world would mold men by changing their environment. The world would shape human behavior, but Christ can change human nature." William George Jordan put it this way, "The world is busy with its own cares, sorrows and joys, and pays little heed to you. There is but one great password to success, --SELF RELIANCE." Learning to work and teaching our children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews, even neighborhood children the great value of work is preparing for the future. Being prepared is PROVIDENT LIVING.

Called to Share!!!
Provident Living
January 6, 2013
All this past year in our Relief Society newsletter, we have had advise on Provident Living through articles on food storage, finances and financial preparation and also home maintenance. If you would like to share your experiences and success stories (with or without your name) with others you can email to: rich_mcmanus@juno.com, mail it to 1704 Fairway Lane, or drop it by the house (feel free to leave it in the screen door). With your permission, we will use these experiences in the future to help encourage others to get prepared. Remember that being prepared is Provident Living.

We can begin our food storage modestly
Provident Living
January 13, 2013
In November 2002, President Hinkley explained that we can begin our food storage modestly "We can begin with a one week's food supply and gradually build it to a month, and then to three months." Look at your own situation and prayerfully ask for help considering your income and the space you have for a supply. This is the Lord's plan and He will help us in getting it into action. But, we have to do our part. We must have a plan that corresponds with what the Lord has asked us to do through His appointed servants. Do we have a budget? Do we follow it? Do we carefuly use our income so that we can be obedient to the counsel from the Lord? It's a brand new year and a good time to review our plan. Being prepared is Provident Living!

Water Storage brings us Peace
Provident Living
January 20, 2013
In addition to food storage, STORE WATER!! In the March Ensign 2009, we were told to store water and that in times of need, having water to drink can be the difference between life and death --or at least between peace and anxiety. If our water system should have a problem, where would we get water? Right from our own supply --if we have one!! Empty and clean soda pop bottles are excellent storage receptacles for water and take up very little space. That is a good way to begin water storage. Being prepared is Provident Living!

Become Self Reliant
PROVIDENT
LIVING
February
17, 2013
From the Church Handbook of
Instructions, we learn, “The Savior has
commanded the Church and its members to be self-reliant and independent…To
become self-reliant, a person must work.
Work is physical, mental, or spiritual effort. It is a basic source of happiness, self-worth,
and prosperity. Through work, people
accomplish many good things in their lives.”
We should be happy in our work and be grateful that we can work. In the words of a Disney song, “Whistle while
you work” and we add that hum while you work, sing while you work, laugh while
you work and just be happy while you work.
Work is so satisfying.

Start small and GROW!
Provident Living
February 10, 2013
Be patient in putting your home storage plan into practice. Even a few cans or bottles a week will add up. Remember ALMA 37:6 says, "By small and simple things are great things brought to pass." A small beginning such as water storage in soda pop bottles, can someday become the water you might need in an emergency. Then, it is no longer a small thing, but a great thing brought to pass. Remember that being prepared is Provident Living.

Water Storage
Provident Living
February 03, 2013
Are you finding it difficult to get started on a home storage program? Are you short of funds just now, but still want to keep up your storage plan? Have you thought about getting started or adding to what you already have by storing water? Here is an idea that will help you get started: Begin to save and clean durable bottles that have been used for soda pop or juice. Rather than purchasing new bottles, save, clean, sanitize and fill soda pop and juice bottles with water and use them for water storage. Just a few each week will help to have good safe water and the beginning of water storage for almost no cost. Be sure to rotate your water supply regularly. Use the water you rotate to water indoor plants and in the warm weather, just water the plants in the yard. Then clean and refill the bottles and put them back in your storage area. Being prepared is Provident Living!

Financial Reserves
Provident Living
January 27, 2013
In the booklet All is Safely Gathered In: Family Home Storage, published in 2007, we were encouraged "to prepare for adversity by looking to the condition of your finances. We urge you to be modest in your expenditures...Save a little money regularly to gradually build a financial reserve." "By gradually building your financial reserve, we will be prepared for unforeseen trials and have an added measure of security and peace in our hearts.: It isn't too late to still do this. Even a few dollars a week or a payday, will start us a reserve and to be prepared for those unforseen experiences. Being prepared is Provident Living.
