February 2013 Quilting Class

  
This video is of Shauna demonstrating all of the steps to make the 10 minute block
 at our February 2013 quilt class.  It was a little tricky, but she made it look so easy!  
You should have heard the squeals coming from all of us when we finally got it!

yardage and cutting directions

5” squares, 9” blocks

Baby 36” x 45”, (4 x 5) 20 blocks
middles ½ yd
1 yard each of 2 fabrics for background

Twin 54” x 90”, (6 x 10) 60 blocks
middles 1 ¼ yd
2 ¼ yd each of 2 fabrics for background

Throw 54” x 72”, (6 x 8) 48 blocks
middles 1 yd
2 yd each of 2 fabrics for background

Full (Double) 72” x 90”, (8 x 10) 80 blocks
middles 1 ½ yd
3 yd each of 2 fabrics for background

Queen 90” x 108”, (10 x 12) 120 blocks
middles 2 ¼ yd
4 ½ yd each of 2 fabrics for background

King 108” x 108”, (12 x 12) 144 blocks
middles 2 ¾ yd
5 ¼ yd each of 2 fabrics for background

Cut 5” squares of all three fabrics; middles cut the same number as # of blocks there are, and backgrounds, cut 2 of each fabric per block, so you end up with 5 squares all together.

Disappearing Nine Patch quilt block

1.Cut strips selvage to selvage (side to side) 4” wide, 3 each of 2 different colors
2. Sew strips together, 1/4” seam, ABA and BAB
3. Iron seams to the darker side
4. Cut across the strips, 4 inches wide, so you have 3 squares sewn together, ABA and BAB
5. Sew three strips together to make a checkerboard, or nine patch. Iron. Trim the edges to make a 10.5 inch square.
6. Cut the square in half both ways to make 4 equal size squares.

7. Turn the squares in many different ways to see what looks good to you.

Baby quilt 36 x 45 to 45 x 60, 20 blocks (4 x 5)
1 ½ yards of 2 colors, 3 yards all together
Twin 54 x 90, 54 blocks (6 x 9)
3 ½ yards of 2 colors, 7 yards all together
Full (Double) 72 x 90, 63 blocks (7 x 9)
4 yards of 2 colors, 8 yards all together
Queen 90 x 108, 90 blocks (9x10) 5 ¾ yards of each, 11 ½ yards all together
King 108 x 108, 100 blocks (10 x 10)
9 patch cut down the middle both directions
6 ¼ yards of each, 12 ½ yards all together.
